A Plumber’s Top Tips For Moving

Are you moving into a new home this summer? If so, we recommend inspecting your home’s plumbing shortly after moving in. Performing a quick inspection of the plumbing can help you familiarize yourself with your new property and can also help you identify problems that need to be addressed immediately.

Look for Water Heater Problems

Check your water heater for signs of corrosion, staining, rust, dripping water and other indications of a problem. If your water heater has visible problems, this could be a sign that your water heater will need to be replaced soon.

Check for Corrosion and Water Damage Under the Sinks

Corrosion and water damage under the sink is a sign that the sink or the drain pipe is leaking. If you see signs of a leak, run the water in the sink until you can find the source of the drip. This will help you determine what needs to be done in order to fix the leak. Often leaks form when the plastic drain pipe comes slightly unscrewed, so you may be able to fix the problem by tightening the fitting.

Find the Water Shut Off Valves

Your new home will have water shut off valves in various places. Most faucets, fixtures and toilets will have their own individual shut off valves. Sometimes shut off valves for showers are hidden in a panel behind the wall. In addition, the house itself will have its own shut off valve, which may be located in the basement or outside the house. Knowing the locations of the various shut off valves can be very important if the plumbing springs a leak. Take a walk around your house and find all the shut off valves, including the water main for the house.

Watch for Dripping Faucets

A leaking faucet can have a variety of different causes, from a damaged cartridge to damaged washers, broken pipes and other problems. If you’re comfortable turning off the water to your faucet and taking apart the pieces, you might be able to identify the damaged areas. If replacing parts of the faucet fails to work, or if you’re not comfortable taking apart your faucet, call us for plumbing repair.

Listen for Mystery Flushes

Toilets that leak from the tank into the bowl will occasionally “flush,” when the water level in the tank drops too low. These mystery flushes mean that the toilet is slowly wasting water, which costs money…not to mention that mystery flushes can be scary in the middle of the night. Luckily, there’s an easy solution to this problem.

To fix your problem, you’ll need to replace the parts in the toilet tank. Toilet tank replacement kits are available for purchase in home improvement centers and at hardware stores. To replace your toilet tank parts, take a look at our blog post on the subject.
