Wait Until the Ground Thaws for Springtime Projects

As soon as the warmer days start settling in, many of us begin thinking about all the outdoor projects we want to tackle. However, don’t be too hasty to get started. Make sure the ground thaws before certain yard projects. Why is waiting so important? Keep reading to learn more.

Yard Work Before the Ground Thaws

You may find that with extra effort you are able to dig in the ground that is not quite thawed, but in doing so, you damage the structural integrity of the soil. Any remodeling project, gardening, etc that you are digging for is going to be something you want on solid and supported ground.

An easy way to test the ground to see whether or not it is still frozen is just to walk on it, or alternatively pat at it with your hand. Frozen ground will be dense and unyielding. If the ground is ready it will have a bit of give when you walk on it, or spring back up when you pat at it.

You can also tell by the effort needed to dig the soil. If you find using your shovel feels like hitting a brick wall, it’s time to go back inside and wait until the ground thaws completely.

Pipe Problems?

Over the winter, you can occasionally develop some plumbing problems. Everything from frozen pipes to small leaks to gutter can occur throughout the winter. If your pipes froze, you will of course want to fix that right away. But now that it’s getting warmer, you’re thinking about looking over your plumbing and seeing if anything needs to be replaced.

This is a great thing to do, but keep in mind you don’t want to start the project until the ground has thawed. Looking it over is one thing, but if you have to do any sort of digging and/or messing with water lines, its best to wait until you are confident in ground thaw before getting started.

Been waiting all year to remodel your bathroom? Try to wait just a little longer. Though the work may mostly be inside, you’ll want to be completely free of freezing temperatures. If you end up needing to repair or replace plumbing structures, it’s always a better bet to start when the ground is no longer frozen or saturated with winter wetness. As mentioned before, digging in frozen or soggy ground degrades the quality and support structure of your soil. This is not something you want to worry about when you’re remodeling your new bathroom!
