How to Dye Easter Eggs Naturally

One of the great things about springtime is Easter. So much fun and candy, plus egg dying! It can be so much fun and there are so many different ways to do it. Check out some of these great ways to dye your eggs this year.

Get Ready for Egg Dying

If for some reason you or your family do not use produce eggs, there are several kinds of eggs made of plastic, wood, paper and other materials that you can dye. Whatever kind of egg you choose, you want to have them ready before you start the process. Make sure produce eggs are boiled, synthetic ones are clean etc.

Dyes From Food

Nature makes a ton of beautiful colors and you can learn how to utilize them to dye your eggs. Here’s a list of colors and the foods you can use to achieve them:

Pink

Get 2 cups of water, 2 cups of peeled and grated beets and 1 – 2 tablespoons of white vinegar.

Green or Blue

Get 2 cups of shredded purple cabbage, enough water to cover 1 head of cabbage by 1 inch, and 1 – 2 tablespoons of white vinegar. If you use white eggs they will turn blue and brown eggs will turn green.

Blueberries can also provide a marbled blue look for your eggs.

Orange

2 cups of yellow onion skins, enough water to cover them, and 1 – 2 tablespoons of white. vinegar.

Alternatively, stir 2 tablespoons of paprika in 1 cup of boiling water, adding 2 teaspoons of white vinegar.

Yellow

2 cups of water, 1 tablespoon of turmeric and 2 tablespoons of vinegar.

Light Purple

Mix 1 cup of grape juice and 1 tablespoon of vinegar

Preparing and Dying the Eggs

With the exception of the light purple and paprika orange, whose instructions are listed, here is how to prepare the dye for your other eggs.

First, bring your colored products and water to a boil (cabbage, onions skins etc). Once boiling lower heat, cover and simmer between 15 – 60 minutes. The longer it simmers the darker the color will be. Natural dyes will come out lighter than most store bought ones. Then, remove from heat and allow to cool to room temperature.

Next, pour the mixture through a mesh strainer to clear out debris. Separate the dyes into bowls and add 1 tablespoon of vinegar for each cup. Finally, add your hard boiled eggs. Place the bowls with eggs into the fridge as you await your color goal. They can be left overnight if desired.
