DIY Laundry Detergent and Dryer Sheets

DIY is all the rage. People like having control over what they use in their households. However, it can also seem like a lot of work. Luckily DIY laundry detergent is an easy and inexpensive way to edge into doing your own thing. So, if you want to save money and cut back on the harsh chemicals, synthetic fragrances, colors and other additives in your life, try out this recipe for  eco-friendly DIY laundry detergent.

DIY Laundry Detergent Ingredients

For approximately 32 ounces of detergent for between 32 – 64 loads of laundry.

• 1 Cup Borax
• 1 Cup Washing Soda
• 1 Bar Grated Bar Soap (homemade or Dr. Bronners, Fels-Naptha, Ivory etc)
• 20 drops of your favorite Essential Oils (optional)

Steps

1. Grate soap. The finer you grate the soap the easier it will dissolve in cold or hard water when needed. Use a food processor if necessary.
2. Add the washing soda and borax to the soap and mix carefully. Use a spoon or gloves as these ingredients can dry the skin.
3. Add essential oils if using and stir in.
4. Store finished product in an air-tight glass container.
5. Use 1 to 2 tablespoons (2 for large or heavily soiled) per load of laundry.

DIY Dryer Sheets Instructions

Who doesn’t love the smell of dryer sheets? But do you know what they use to make them? If you want soft laundry with a pleasant smell after drying, why don’t you try making your own? Here’s what you’ll need:

• Handful of 5 inch scraps of clean cloth (cut up an old t-shirt, cheap dish towels, etc)
• 25 drops of essential oil of your choice (lavender, sweet orange, lemon)
• 1 cup white vinegar
• 1 resealable glass container

Steps

1. Mix vinegar with essential oil and put in glass container.
2. Add cloth scraps to container. All cloth should be moistened but not saturated.
3. Seal and flip jar upside to mix. Leave near dryer.
4. Whenever needed remove a couple cloths, wring out excess liquid back into jar and put in dryer.
